Affecting approximately 1 in 7 adults in the state, mental illness is one of the most common health conditions in California. Roughly 1 out of every 23 individuals struggles with a serious mental condition that prevents them from carrying out basic daily tasks. Unfortunately, only a third receive adequate treatment out of fear of being judged or due to lack of affordable health care. That’s where California mental health hotlines can help.

Cost shouldn’t be a factor when it comes to getting you or your loved ones the help needed. It’s not easy to take this important step, but when you’re ready, several organizations for California residents offer free assistance.

988 Suicide and Crisis Line

Designated as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 988 is the three-digit calling code that connects those struggling with their feelings to caring crisis counselors. All calls to the crisis hotline in California are free, confidential and available 24-7.

SAMHSA’s National Helpline

Individuals with mental or substance abuse disorders may receive referrals through the SAMHSA National Helpline. Available 24-7, the service provides information on local support groups, treatment centers and community organizations.

DHCS California Mental Health Hotlines

Individuals experiencing a mental health crisis may contact their local Department of Health Care Services for a list of county resources or search for county hotlines.

National Alliance on Mental Illness

NAMI’s goal is to raise awareness of mental health and to provide resources to those in need. If calling isn’t an option, you can reach out via email. The hotline offers limited availability Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST.

Additionally, you can reach out via text to a crisis counselor or get assistance outside hotline hours.
