Mental health challenges affect people across the United States, and New Mexico is no exception. A National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) report based on 2022 survey data found that more than 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness. Prevalence was higher among women, at 26.4%, and highest among young adults ages 18 to 25, where more than one in three had some form of mental illness.

New Mexico is a beautiful state with breathtaking scenery, but its residents aren’t immune from the mental health challenges affecting the rest of the country. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 414,000 adults in New Mexico live with a mental health condition, and 101,000 of them live with a serious mental illness.

Many New Mexicans who need care have trouble getting it. NAMI estimates that 93,000 adults in the state needed mental health treatment and did not receive it, with cost a leading reason. If you or someone you love is dealing with anxiety, low mood or another mental health concern, help is available in New Mexico and nationwide.
