Mental health is a severe challenge both in the United States as a whole and in New Mexico, and the problem is only getting worse each year based on New Mexico mental health crisis data. Take a look at these stats from a 2021 National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) report: More than 1 in 5 U.S. adults are living with a mental illness, with the prevalence even higher among females at 27.8%. Even scarier, mental health challenges seem to increase with each generation. The NIMH report found that one-third of young adults aged 18-25 had some sort of mental illness.
New Mexico is a beautiful state with breathtaking scenery, but its residents aren’t immune from the mental health challenges plaguing the country. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 300,000 adults in New Mexico have a mental illness, and 43.3% of adults in the state say they’ve dealt with anxiety or depression.
Perhaps the saddest part of the mental health story in New Mexico is that almost one-fourth of the residents dealing with mental illness say they’ve been unable to find the help they need. If you or someone you love is facing a mental health problem, help is available, both in New Mexico and nationwide.
